Minister for Economy and Education Aiyaz Sayed Khaiyum told parliament today that the reconstruction of the schools destroyed by Tropical Cyclone Winston is going well.
SODELPA MP, Mikaele Leawere asked Sayed-Khaiyum when the rehabilitation will be completed as its two years and 12 days since Cyclone Winston hit Fiji and the children are suffering because of the delay in reconstruction.
Sayed-Khaiyum says it will be completed.
Another SODELPA MP, Salote Radrodro then told parliament that Avea District School in Vanuabalavu has not been repaired and the school also didn’t come under the New Zealand Government’s rehabilitation program because of relocation issues.
She asked Sayed-Khaiyum to explain whether children are attending school and when will the school be rebuilt.
Sayed-Khaiyum says Avea District School currently has a tent with 10 students and temporary sheds will be built when the work is being tendered out.
He says this work was referred to them much later however classes are continuing.
The Education Minister also highlighted that three schools in Koro which include Tuatua Primary School, Koro High School and Qalivakabau Primary School have been adopted under the Australian Education Scheme.
He says 70 percent of the work has been completed at Tuatua Primary School while 72% of the work has been completed at Koro High School and Qalivakabau Primary school.
Sayed-Khaiyum also highlighted that somebody had agreed to adopt Kade Primary School in Koro, however, they did not turn up with the funds and the government has now called for tenders for this school.
