The accused in the rape trial of an 11-year-old girl has told the Suva High Court this afternoon that he did not rape the girl.
The 87-year-old man who is charged with two counts of rape and one count of sexual assault has said that the girl is lying.
The alleged incident took place between April and May 2016 in Nakasi.
Defense lawyer Samanunu Vaniqi asked the man if he had some health problems, to which the man said he has urination problem, chest pains, hearing and sight problems.
Vaniqi further questioned if he was taking medicines for the health problems, to which the 87-year old man says he does.
During cross examination, state lawyer Kimberly Semisi asked the man if he was fit in April and May 2016, to which he said that he might have been well as he could not remember.
When further questioned by Semisi if he could remember a little girl who was a tenant at his house at that time.
The elderly man said he could not recall.
Justice Temo then asked the man whether he knew the girl.
The man responded by saying that he does not know her.
Justice Temo then asked him if he heard the girls evidence in court where she had said that the 87-year-old man had raped her.
The man then laughed and said no.
Justice Temo than asked the man why he was laughing and was it because the girl was lying.
The man responded by saying yes.
The trial will continue next Monday.
