The Fiji Secondary Schools Rugby Union has decided that Queen Victoria School will not be hosting any games of the Eastern Zone Secondary Schools Rugby Competition for the time being.
This comes after a 19-year-old student of a participating school was allegedly assaulted by a group of students belonging to a prominent boarding school in Tailevu last Friday.
The alleged incident occurred during the competition after which the student was hospitalized.
Speaking to Fijivillage, Fiji Secondary Schools Rugby Union President, Setareki Merekula says that for now they have decided that it will be better not to host the games at QVS and he is still awaiting a report from the officials of the Eastern Zone Secondary Schools Rugby regarding the incident.
When asked by Fijivillage on police presence during such competitions, Merekula says they have always asked for police presence however availability of police officers at the venues is an issue.
Meanwhile, Police Chief Operations Officer, ACP Maretino Qiolevu has highlighted that police will beef up their presence at the Secondary Schools Zonal Rugby Competition venues.
Qiolevu has called on parents to be supportive and responsible adding that parents and ex‑scholars should refrain from instigating problems.
He says it is also high time that students who are taking part in these competitions take ownership of their actions on and off the field.
The 19-year-old student is back home in stable condition.
Police have confirmed that charges are yet to be laid on any of the students that were allegedly involved in the incident.
