The Fiji Sports Commission is hoping to get the full amount of funds that they have requested for in the 2018/2019 National Budget.
After their submission to the Ministry of Economy, Fiji Sports Commission Chairman Peter Mazey says that they have a lot of focus towards sports development next year.
Mazey says that requests submitted for the major overseas trips include the 2019 Netball World Cup in the United Kingdom in July, the Special Olympics going to Abu Dhabi, the Fiji Airways Flying Fijians preparations towards the 2019 Rugby World Cup in Japan in September, Team Fiji preparations for the Pacific Games in Samoa and the Youth Olympics.
Mazey adds that Fiji will be hosting some major sports next year including the Weightlifting World Junior Championship in Suva, the Under 20 East Asia Pacific World Cricket Qualifier and the Australian National Rugby Championship.
Since it’s inception in 2013, Mazey says that the Fiji Sports Commission have received approximately $32 million from the government as grants to various sporting bodies.
He believes that the government support towards sports development is a big factor in Fiji always being ahead of other Pacific island nations.
The Fiji Sports Commission has also requested for assistance towards their short term development in bringing specialists to train local coaches, referees and strength and conditioning coaches.
Mazey confirms that the cricket and rugby league are the only sporting bodies who have applied for international coaches.
Meanwhile the Commission through the Ministry of Youth and Sports received $9 million dollars from the 2017/2018 National Budget.
