Spanish soccer legend, Andres Iniesta, who scored Spain's winning goal in the 2010 World Cup final, has announced his retirement from international football following the team's defeat against Russia.
The 34‑year‑old came on as a substitute as Spain lost 4‑3 on penalties to the hosts in the last 16 earlier today.
Iniesta's last kick for his country was to score in the shootout in his 131st ‑ and final ‑ international outing.
Russian goalkeeper and captain Igor Akinfeev was the hero as he saved two penalties from Spain.
In another round of 16 match, Croatia defeated Denmark 3-2 on penalties.
France will play Uruguay in the first quarter final at 2am Saturday while Russia will now play Croatia in their quarter final at 6am Sunday.
In the round of 16 matches tomorrow, Brazil will play Mexico at 2am tomorrow while Belgium will play Japan at 6am.
