More young people are getting diabetes in Fiji and the youngest is 11-years of age.
This was highlighted by the National adviser NCD of the Ministry of Health, Dr Isimeli Tukana during the 2nd Diabetes Foot care Symposium at Holiday Inn today.
Dr Tukana says that the common diabetes in children is type 1 where they do not have insulin which is the main hormones that controls diabetes.
Dr Tukuna says that there is also an increase in number of children having type 2 diabetes which is due to eating unhealthy food.
He says their studies are mainly on adults and now they are moving to children obesity which is a contributing factor to NCD.
Dr Tukuna adds that Fiji in diabetes is number 11 in the Western Pacific region.
Meanwhile, the Assistant Health Minister Alex O' Connor highlighted that there was a total of 791 amputations in 2016 and the statistics show that the amputation rates have increased from 12.1 to 12.6% from 2015.
O’Connor says according to data collected by the Ministry of Health and Information Unit there were 669 amputations in 2015.
