In line with its commitment to creating cleaner and healthier municipalities, government will now be increasing rubbish pickups for kitchen waste.

The first phase of the program will begin within the Nasinu Town boundary, tomorrow, and run daily till Friday.

Ratepayers and residents in Nasinu are encouraged to place all kitchen waste on the roadsides before 9am each day to ensure timely collection and avoid fines.

Residents and ratepayers are also advised that all refuse should be properly placed in garbage bags for collections.

Any refuse not properly packed in bags or placed after collection time may incur a fine under the Litter Act 2008.

A pilot programme will also be introduced in Nasinu where compost bins will be distributed where Fijians can dispose of organic waste like leaves and kitchen wastes.

The Minister for Economy had earlier stated that in major urban centres rubbish is choking road ways and communities and it is unacceptable.

He says for this reason they will now be increasing rubbish pick ups everyday from Monday to Friday first starting in Nasinu.

Meanwhile, government has allocated $1.5M for the collection of rubbish by local authorities.
