We are great friends, we are family, we are Melanesian brothers.

These were the sentiments shared by the Prime Minister of Papua New Guinea, Peter O’Neill at a traditional welcoming ceremony at the Grand Pacific Hotel last night.

O’Neill extended his appreciation to Prime Minister, Voreqe Bainimarama and government leaders who were present for the traditional welcome.

He adds that it is a great honor for Papua New Guinea to finally make an official visit to Fiji.

The two day official visit will see O'Neill addressing the Fijian Parliament on the progress of preparations by his government for the hosting of the Asia‑Pacific Economic Cooperation Summit in Port Moresby in November.

He will also be the Keynote Speaker at a Public Lecture hosted by the University of the South Pacific at its Japan‑Pacific ICT Theatre today on the topic of "Pacific Regionalism".

Other programmes for the visit include a visit to the Fiji Police Special Response Unit to showcase the anti‑riot capability of the Fiji Police Force and a lunch hosted by the Fiji‑PNG Business Council.

The Prime Minister of Papua New Guinea will depart Fiji tomorrow.
