Prime Minister of Papua New Guinea Peter O’Neill has formally invited Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama to address the Asia‑Pacific Economic Cooperation or APEC Summit in Port Moresby in November.

While addressing the Fijian Parliament on the progress of preparations by the Papua New Guinea government in hosting the event, O’Neill says that the summit provides an enormous opportunity for many of the countries in the region.

O’Neill says that the Asia‑Pacific Economic Cooperation Summit  is a forum for 21 economies that includes the United States, China, Japan, Australia and Russia and many more of the largest global economies promoting free trade throughout the Asia‑Pacific region.

He says the summit will be attended by close to 9,000 delegates from all over the world and Papua New Guinea continues to provide the highest level of security to all its visiting leaders.

O’Neill has also revealed the he would like to explore a free trade agreement between the two countries.

Papua New Guinea is only the second country to be accorded the honor to address parliament.

The Prime Minister of Papua New Guinea will also be the Keynote Speaker at a Public Lecture hosted by the University of the South Pacific at its Japan‑Pacific ICT Theatre today on the topic of "Pacific Regionalism".

Other programmes for the visit include a visit to the Fiji Police Special Response Unit to showcase the anti‑riot capability of the Fiji Police Force and a lunch hosted by the Fiji‑PNG Business Council.

The Prime Minister of Papua New Guinea will depart Fiji tomorrow.
