World Rugby are examining the excessive use of Television Match Officials ahead of potential changes to the game, which could come into play by November.

Last week, the southern hemisphere’s rugby governing body, SANZAAR, announced a review into the TMO system following “some challenges” in Super Rugby and the June international Tests.

The organisation’s Chief Executive, Andy Marinos, said they wanted referees to take control of games once more, with TMOs providing “context to the officials’ decision making”.

Now, World Rugby CEO Brett Gosper has added his voice to those calling for a systemic overhaul, although he has claimed that the World Rugby review was not specifically prompted by controversy in recent southern hemisphere matches.

With Marinos having suggested last week that protocols were not being consistently implemented, Gosper will hope that his organisation’s review can help improve the fairness and speed of refereeing decisions.
