Youth unemployment rate in Fiji is at a high of 18.1% whereas the overall unemployment rate in Fiji is at 4.5%.

This was highlighted by the Minister for Employment Jone Usamate while launching the 5 year Strategic Plan and the Operational Plan of the Ministry for Employment, Productivity and Industrial Relations.

Usamate says that youth unemployment and under employment not only affects the young but also the employers, communities and the economy.

Usamate says that in 2018/2019 financial year his Ministry will vigorously promote volunteerism amongst Fiji’s population, particularly targeting the young ones to be able to make a difference in their lives and at the same time build their skills and confidence.

The Minister for Employment also says that they will also continue to engage people with special abilities in to the workforce.

He adds that the Ministry will also focus on engaging the elderly to generate productive growth by providing them with income earning opportunities.
