People need to be able to overcome the constraints that they place on themselves individually and as a society as generally people did not talk very openly about breast cancer.

This was highlighted by the Acting Prime Minister Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum while speaking at the Cancer Symposium and the launch of the Pinktober Campaign at the Oncology Auditorium at the CWM Hospital.

Sayed-Khaiyum also pointed out that in Fiji people tend to sometimes depend on traditional medicine, traditional ways of dealing with certain lumps that appear on they bodies, or they are shy and for some, talking about these symptoms is seen as a taboo.

The Acting Prime Minister has also acknowledged the work of supporting cancer patients through the provision of transport, medication, and overseas evacuation and awareness that is carried out by the Fiji Cancer Society.

Meanwhile Head of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the CWM Hospital, Dr James Fong has also stressed that Medical Professionals and Organisations such as the Fiji Cancer Society have been working for a long time to help patients navigate the system of cancer care.

Dr Fong says that they are now trying to bring in more surpport services for hard to reach palces in the North and West to ensure that patients are able to present their symptoms early and are able to navigate the Cancer care systems better.
