The Makoi Maternity Unit which was opened in February this year is now operating 24 hours and 7 days a week.

The Ministry of Health says that the Unit which has been designed to conduct low risk maternity deliveries has as of last month carried out 4 deliveries and is gearing up for 30 deliveries this month.

Health Minister Rosy Akbar had earlier in the week visited the Unit and had discussions with the team regarding the progress of the new developments.

Akbar says that the Makoi Maternity Unit is a state of the art facility that has been constructed with an investment of $6.83 million by government.

She says that $300,000 has also been allocated by government for latest medical equipment to ensure the facility provides higher standards of maternal health care services.

Akbar says services at the Makoi Maternity Unit include Maternal Child Health care, Antenatal clinics, booking clinics and postnatal clinics.

The Health Minister says that the Unit is expected to handle up to 100 deliveries per month as it gradually progresses towards achieving its full capacity.

Akbar also stressed that the low risk deliveries done at the Makoi Maternity Unit will ease the load at CWM Hospital maternity.

On average the Makoi Maternity Unit attends to 300 mothers per month through the antenatal clinics with 119 new bookings recorded for the months of July and August this year.

The Unit that is being manned by 21 midwives, a medical doctor, ward assistants and administration staff has also broadened the health care services for child care and primary care services all under one roof.
