13 needy people in their 50's have received ration and special Diwali hamper packs from the Poor Relief Society.

Poor Relief Society’s President Sabita Gandhi says that yesterday approximately $1,800 worth of ration and advance Diwali hamper packs were distributed to 13 people who are on their society’s list.

The ration packs have basic food items.

71-year-old Krishna Kumari who has been receiving rations for the past 15 years says that she is living alone and there is no family support adding that with the help of this Society, she is able to earn a living.

Poor Relief Society's Vice President Kushla Prasad says that she has been working with this Society for the past 18 years and currently 28 women are running the Society.

The funds for the rations are raised through walkathon, donations from businesses, society members, friends and families and this assistance is given to people who live between the Suva to Nausori corridor.

The Society has been providing rations to the needy since its inception in 1956.
