The Minister for Environment Dr Mahendra Reddy has confirmed that so far staffing constraint has not been an issue for the Ministry.
Dr Reddy highlighted this after the UN Special Rapporteur on Human Rights and Environment David Boyd had highlighted that the Ministry is seriously under-resourced because of the only 5 to 6 staff that they have who handles waste and pollution related matters Fiji wide as part of their Waste Management and Pollution Control Unit.
He says that this could be an issue in the future given the fact that with increased interest in development projects, environment will need to be safeguarded.
Dr Reddy says that so far they had not seen any major obstacles to enforcement though Fiji being a small country and people are connected and they would try all means to bypass the legislation.
He says that they are vigilant about this and are particular about documentation so that they provide all information should there be any interference.
