From the 1st of January 2019, all workers will be compensated for injuries and death as a result of accident arising out of and in the course of employment and students will be compensated for accidents occurring on any school premises, on a no fault basis by the Accident Compensation Commission.

While making this announcement, the Minister for Economy and Attorney General Aiyaz Sayed‑Khaiyum says this means that employers will no longer have to pay Workers Compensation Insurance for any death or injuries at work.

He says that this will also help small businesses.

He says that this will be paid from the TPAF and FNU levy that all the employers have been paying 1 percent from their gross salary.

Sayed‑Khaiyum says that 40 percent of that TPAF levy will go towards the funding of the compensation.

The CEO of the Accident Compensation Commission Parvez Akbar says the maximum amount that will be paid for permanent partial incapacity a worker or student will be paid  $75,000, maximum payout for permanent total incapacity is $150,000 and $75,000 for death.

He says that in other cases they will also be paid $75,000 maximum.

Akbar says that this covers any injuries in an accident from school or work place but a medical report is required.

He says that it requires the relevant medical report to look at the injury and assess the extent of compensation.

He says that there can be incapacity that will subsequently heal, so some might fall into that category and be compensated with a certain amount.

Akbar says that whether it is a motor vehicle accident, an employment or school accident the amount of compensation that someone will receive if any, will depend on the medical specialist that is doing the assessment.

The medical specialist will decide the percentage of incapacity.

Akbar says that injuries should be reported within 14 days and for death 7 days.

He says that this will also apply to students that get injured from a school sporting event.
