The Chiefs are facing the prospect of a season without All Blacks flanker Sam Cane while he continues his recovery from a broken neck.
Cane suffered the injury last October during the All Blacks’ 32‑30 win over the Springboks in Pretoria.
Chiefs assistant coach Tabai Matson says that Cane is still miles away from recovery and to be fair they have to count him out as there is lots of footy to play before he even gets close.
The Chiefs will take on the Highlanders in their first game this season on the 15th of next month.
