A 7-month-old baby is the youngest cancer patient in Fiji, battling Wilms tumour, which is the most common type of kidney cancer in children.

WOWS Kids Fiji Team Leader Viola Lesi says that they are currently supporting 73 children who are battling cancer.

17 children are undergoing chemotherapy, 10 children undergoing palliative care and 15 are in remission.

She says that the families of the children who are fighting cancer are provided support by WOWS Kids Fiji with the aim to reduce financial pressure on parents so they can better focus on their children.

Lesi adds that they also take care of the cost of transportation for these families in Viti Levu, Vanua Levu and from the outer islands and the support also extends to weekly shopping and phone vouchers to help with items they need to buy while in hospital and phone cards so they are able to keep in touch with people at home.

Lesi says that WOWS Kids Fiji also takes care of the cost of accommodation for families who come from rural and remote areas bringing their children to the main hospitals.

She also highlighted that WOWS Kids Fiji has raised a total of $220,000 in 2018 to continue the assistance it provides to families whose children are fighting cancer.
