Two newly refurbished Emergency Operations Centres have been opened in Nausori and Korovou.
Fiji now has a total of eight Emergency Operations Centres refurbished across Fiji in the past 13 months.
While officiating at the opening of the Emergency Operations Centre in Nausori, Assistant Minister for Rural and Maritime Development Jale Sigarara says that this refurbishment will increase disaster preparedness and communications before, during, and after a disaster.
He adds a total of $27,600 was invested in the Central Divisional Emergency Operations Centre in Nausori while $36,600 was invested in the Korovou District Emergency Operations Centre that will serve the areas around Tailevu North.
This was funded under the European Union’s Building Safety and Resilience project in partnership with the Pacific Community.
The Pacific Community's Director of the Geoscience, Energy and Maritime Division, Dr Andrew Jones says that this work now ensures divisions are able to both engage locally and communicate with the National Disaster Management team to increase coordination in times of crisis.
The other Emergency Operations Centres are located in Lautoka, Nadi, Tavua, Yasawa, Nausori, Vunidawa and Nabouwalu in the Northern Division.
