I still remember 30 or 35 years back we were satisfied with a few hundred dollars sponsorship and I still remember the day we received $500 and that was a big achievement for us.

Special Olympics Fiji Chairman Bishwa Sidal says it brought tears to his eyes to see the kind of support they are now getting.

Sidal says with a 35 member team which is the biggest team of athletes with disabilities the credit goes to those who have been working tirelessly behind the scenes.

Sidal expressed his appreciation towards Digicel whose sponsorship has grown over the last few years from merchandise to now the sponsorship of $100,000.

He says it was also good to see the attitude of the Government over the last 10-15 years and they were still asking this morning if we needed more funds.

The Fiji Special Olympic team who will be representing the country in the Special Olympics World Summer Games will be departing for Abu Dhabi this Wednesday.

The 21 athletes will be competing in athletics, swimming, table tennis and women’s 5 a side football which will be held from the 14th to the 21st of this month.

Digicel Fiji CEO Mike Greig encouraged the team to take the opportunity to learn about each other, about life as well as about competing.

The team was hosted to a morning tea by Digicel.
