1,149 children with disabilities in Fiji are attending special schools with 143 children with disabilities in mainstream schools.
Minister for Education Rosy Akbar today highlighted this while speaking at a Workshop for Teachers of Children with Albinism adding that this number is an increase from 1,153 children with disabilities in schools in 2018.
Akbar says it is important to update and continue to build this data to measure progress in providing education to every child in Fiji regardless of their disability.
She has also reminded the teachers that it is their responsibility to help children with disabilities enjoy life as other children and to reach out to them by being sensitive to their needs.
The Education Minister adds that when people are sensitive to the needs of their students in special schools or mainstream schools they will able to better help them understand and enjoy learning.
