Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama has met with the President of Austria Alexander Van der Bellen at the United Nations Headquarters in New York.
The Prime Minister expressed his gratitude to the government and the people of Austria for their generous contribution to Pacific Small Island Developing States partnership projects that are being supported through funding from the Austrian government and its partners.
The projects within the Pacific region support climate change mitigation, renewable energy and efforts towards conservation and the management of natural resources.
Bainimarama acknowledged Van der Bellen’s tremendous contributions to the promotion of greater climate ambition across the globe as he has been a strong advocate for climate action for many years.
The leaders also discussed how oceans, rivers, lakes and glaciers were one interconnected system affected by climate change.
Van der Bellen affirmed the ongoing support of the Austrian government to Fiji and the Pacific region.
Bainimarama was also given an invitation to attend the R20 Austrian World Summit in May 2019.
The Summit provides increased opportunities to increase partnerships and exchange experiences and will generate momentum for the 2019 Climate Summit which takes place in New York in September.
