The Sex Offenders Registration Bill 2018 if passed, this register will not be available to the public.
This was highlighted by the Chair of the Justice, Law and Human Rights Committee, Alvick Maharaj while taking submissions on the Bill in Vunivutu Settlement in Vanua Levu.
Maharaj explained that if the Bill is debated and passed in Parliament then government prepares a register and anyone who is convicted of a sexual offence will have his or her name go into this register.
Maharaj then stressed that this information will not be publicly available to everyone.
However, he highlighted that this register is for information for agencies that include the Fiji Police Force, Fiji Corrections Service, Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions, Ministry for Justice, Ministry of Education, Ministry of Women and Children, Ministry of Defense, Ministry of Health, Department of Immigration and the Fiji Revenue Customs Service.
Maharaj says that this is done to monitor the movement of the sex offenders once they have completed their sentence.
