The Labasa High Court has sentenced a 22 year old man to 3 years and 9 months imprisonment for a count of attempt to commit rape.
It was heard in court that the 50 year old victim is the aunt of the man and was going home alone in the night when the man forcefully attempted to rape her.
Judge Justice Thushara Rajasinghe says sexual exploitation of women by the people known to them is one of the worst form of crimes.
He says it not only invades the physical freedom and autonomy of the victim but also causes severe psychological traumas in the mind of the victim adding the offence of attempt to commit rape is a serious offence.
A non parole period of 1 year and 9 months has been set.
