The Fiji Mountaineering and Climbing Association has paid tribute to Sir Edmund Hillary and Sherpa Tenzing Norgay.

Sir Hillary and Norgay  became the first climbers confirmed to have reached the summit of Mount Everest on this day in 1953.

Fiji Mountaineering and Climbing Association says Fiji shares and greatly preserves a short story about Sir Hillary and his passion for climbing.

They say Sir Hillary made two attempts to climb Joske’s Thumb, the first of which ended before reaching the base of the mountain, due to heavy undergrowth.

In 1983, Sir Hillary reached the summit of Joske’s Thumb along with several members of the Fiji Rucksack Club.
