89-year-old Elenoa Dani from Nadovu Village in Naitasiri says it is one of the happiest days for the village as they can finally drink water from taps.

This is after Minister for Infrastructure Jone Usamate commissioned a new water project in the village that will benefit 26 households.

Dani says before they would get water from streams and boreholes but they had to boil the water so that they do not get sick.

She says there were challenges but are thankful to government for providing them with this accessibility to a safe and clean water source.

The $71,000 project includes newly constructed dam and brand new 10,000 gallon Ferro cement tank, this tank holds up to around 45,000 litres of water. Also part of the project were the installation of 12 new showers and 12 new stand pipes with slabs.

Minister for Infrastructure Jone Usamate says government, through the Water Authority of Fiji  is prioritizing access to clean and safe water and it has set aside in this current financial year a total budget of $27m for water schemes in the rural areas in Fiji.

Usamate says every Fijian deserves to live with security and happiness that only clean water can provide; water that can be used for drinking, cooking, washing and keeping ourselves clean.
