A 39-year-old woman who set fire to her sister's house at Omkar Road in Nasinu in March this year will spend six months behind bars.

Vinita Devi Nair has been sentenced to 21 months imprisonment however, Judge Justice Aruna Aluthge has ruled that Nair will be in jail for six months and 15 months has been suspended for three years.

The court was told that Nair who is a mother of eight and her youngest child is three months old, had alleged that her sister had taken food items from her and this is why she set her house on fire.

Nair who sells vegetables in the market had pleaded guilty to the charge of arson.

The court was also told that Nair’s son was sleeping inside her sister’s house when she lit the fire.

Her sister's house had sustained $250 worth of damage where the door was damaged during the fire.
