Minister for Education Rosy Akbar says she has recently approved for a change in policy which will see school teachers turning 55 to either choose to retire on their birthday or to stay throughout the academic year.

Speaking at the Fiji Head Teachers Association Annual Conference in Suva today, Akbar says that this is one way for them to appreciate their services towards the country.

Akbar says there is also a policy change for the school curriculum to be covered at a pace which best suits the students needs.

She says the curriculum can now be covered up till Term 3 and will alleviate the current pressure to have extra classes in the process.

She adds that she wants to students to engage in activities outside of school.

Akbar also reminded teachers that the zero-tolerance policy on corporal punishment still stands and any form of assault on students will not be tolerated.

She also says that all new graduates in the teaching will field will now start on the same salary batch as there were a lot of complaints earlier about salary variations.
