The CEO of Land Transport Authority, Samuel Simpson says they are no longer looking at the jaywalking issue as they do not have enforcement officers on the ground to enforce the regulation.

Simpson has clarified this after Fijivillage questioned him regarding the issue of jaywalking and what the LTA is doing to stop the culture of people crossing from anywhere.

He also told us that local authorities are now looking at the issue of jaywalking.

Jaywalking has now become a major issue in the country where people have been seen crossing the road from wherever and whenever they like and do not give any consideration to the oncoming vehicles.

It has been noticed that motorists have to stop vehicles on highways and major roads in towns and cities as pedestrians are just crossing the road anyhow.

Police had revealed late last year that pedestrians and passengers accounted for most deaths on our roads in 2019.

Out of the 55 people who lost their lives on our roads last year, 22 were pedestrians.

We are trying to speak to Police Director Traffic, SSP Mahesh Mishra on the issue.
