The National Fire Authority is investigating a fire near Korovisilou Village in Serua which burnt a grassland area and threatened nearby homes in the village yesterday.
Upon arrival at the scene, fire crew started to back burn towards the fire front from about 10 meters away from the nearby homes as strong winds and dry weather conditions intensified the burning grassland spreading towards nearby homes.
This method is to basically reduce the amount of flammable material nearby and quickly stop short the fire in its devastating path towards the homes.
The fire died down when it reached the area that was back burned.
The NFA continues to urge the public and settlements located near grass areas or sugarcane farms to be very careful when handling fire, cigarettes or matches especially during this dry weather conditions.
