There’s an expectation or sense in every single member of the Flying Fijians that they will do something special against the Springboks tomorrow.
Fiji will have the chance to rewrite the ending of their last encounter with South Africa at the 2007 Rugby World Cup when the two sides meet again.
“Momentarily tense” is how the 37-20 quarterfinal victory by the Springboks four years ago in Marseille is now described by South Africa's media management, but their players involved still recall how close Fiji came to tipping them out of the World Cup tournament that they went on to win.
Ten of South Africa’s starting XV this time around played in that match, which guarantees there will be no complacency on South Africa’s part when the two sides meet in Wellington.
Fiji coach, Samu Domoni Jnr said that at preparation this week the focus has been on how well the defensive system can work against the Springboks.
His Boks counterpart, Peter de Villers has return to his drawing board in trying to stop the free-running Fijian with the sheer will to win that got the Springboks through that match in 2007 and in round one against Wales is likely to be the most valuable weapon in their armory.
Fiji’s captain’s run is scheduled for this hour PM at the impressive Wellington Regional Stadium.
Assistant coach of the Fiji 15s team, Shannon Fraser said they have to muscle up against the Springboks in their Rugby World Cup match tomorrow night.
Fiji will take on South Africa tomorrow at 6pm and you can catch the live commentary on our sister station, Viti FM with the voice of rugby Malakai Veisamasama and expert comments from Ilivasi Tabua.
We call on the people of Fiji to fly our country’s flag for our rugby team - fly the flag at your house, at work, on your vehicle and on the streets. Let us all fly the flag for Fiji and get behind the National Team.
