28 students have been awarded overseas scholarships this morning by the Ministry of i-Yaukei Affairs after the selection process last week.
Of these, 21 will be studying in Malaysia, 1 in Singapore, 4 in Australia and 2 in New Zealand.
Ministry of I-Taukei Affairs Permanent Secretary Savenaca Kaunisela said that there are 10 more applicants on the reserve list but are awaiting for their pending exam results to confirm their place of study.
All successful applicants together with their parents were taken through an orientation program this morning to familiarize themselves with the scholarship policies and what the government expects from them.
Kaunisela said that they want students to be well prepared physically, mentally, financially, and more importantly to be honest with themselves at their various universities.
He stressed that over 10,000 students have benefitted from the Ministry of I-Taukei scholarships.
Kaunisela added that last year, the ministry awarded only 12 overseas scholarships compared to 28 this year.
$10 million has been allocated this year to assist the i-Taukei and Rotumans seeking higher education both local and overseas.
