The Duavata Women’s Group from Taveuni is showcasing the unique bone carving at this year’s National Women’s Expo which is a major attraction.
Anamaria Akanisa said they have prepared all the items in just two weeks which includes craft from bones, coconut shells, pearl shells, mats and fans.
She added they use the cow bones to make unique necklaces, earrings and souvenirs from which they earn about $300 a month.
Out of 22 women’s groups in Taveuni, Duavata women’s group was selected to be part of the Expo.
Meanwhile, 43 women from Macuata Women’s Club Association are selling flowers made of kuta, wall decorations made out of different colorful shells, mats from different weaves and baskets.
Association President Samanunu Katonivere said last year, six Tikinas took part and each Tikina earned $4,900.
Katonivere highlighted that 12 Tikinas are part of the Expo and each Tikina is looking to collect more than $5,000 which will help them, their families and villages back in Macuata.
The National Women’s Expo is underway at the Vodafone Arena.
