SODELPA MP Aseri Radrodro today asked the Fiji Roads Authority to explain what sort of consideration it has given to the travelling public while carrying out major road rehabilitation work between Suva and Nausori.
The FRA made a presentation before the Parliamentary Public Accounts Committee and most questions were regarding traffic congestion created by rehabilitation road works.
Radrodro asked the FRA on what it is doing to prevent unnecessary traffic congestion in the mornings and afternoons between the Suva-Nausori corridor.
While responding to the questions, FRA’s Chief Financial Officer, Robert Sen says they do a lot of public awareness through the media and their website about road works to minimize traffic.
Radrodro then stated that public awareness will not resolve traffic congestion and asked what the FRA is doing with other stakeholders to ease the flow of traffic.
Sen says they have told the contractors not to carry out work on high volume traffic areas from 6am to 9am and 4pm to 6pm for people to travel with ease.
Sen also highlighted that the four lane road project from Nakasi to Rewa Bridge is scheduled to be completed by late this year.
He says rehabilitation road upgrade works between Suva and Nausori is expected to finish by May this year.
Fijivillage has also asked Sen in relation to the dug up area along Ratu Mara Road near BSP Samabula and near Laqere Bridge towards Standard Concrete that is forcing motorists to slow their vehicles causing more traffic congestions.
Sen says the FRA has no other choice but to carry out rehab work.
He says their contractors have to dig the road, do the necessary tests, put cement stabilizers and the final sealing.
The FRA says there would be traffic congestions and their contractors are minimising it as much as possible adding road works are also taking place at night.
