Workers, farmers and students living along Irrigation Back Road in Lakena now have ease of access to the main roads after the completion of the repairs to the Irrigation Back Road.
Farmers living along Irrigation Back Road just outside Nausori Town are now able to get their produce to the market faster and school children can now attend school every day after repairs.
Fiji Roads Authority contractors’ Fulton Hogan Hiways Rewa Supervisor, Ulaiasi Bolalailai, says the maintenance crew had to remove high shoulders, graded, laid and compacted gravel on the one‑kilometre‑long road, and also cleaned out vegetation debris from the roadside drainage.
Before the upgrade, vegetable farmer Mohammed Sahid said the road was not accessible to vehicles, including carriers and four‑wheel drives.
The 37-year-old said that during heavy rain, the road would flood and their children had to stay home until water levels went down.
Sahid says that now they no longer have to carry vegetables to the main road due to reluctant carriers with the newly repaired road that they have access to.
