Many New Zealanders are waking up without power after Cyclone Fehi ravaged many parts of the country overnight.

At least 2000 homes in Fox Glacier on West Coast of New Zealand's South Island are being supported by local power generators.

Over 500 people are also without power in Christchurch.

Radio NZ reports there is still a heavy rain warning is in place for Bay of Plenty and Rotorua.

Residents in parts of Taranaki were also asked to evacuate ahead of an expected high tide at midnight last night.

It says Wellington Airport had major flight disruptions yesterday, and several flights this morning have been cancelled.
