As the 2018 Commonwealth Games get ready to kick off this Thursday, the Fiji Weightlifting team will also be carrying Fiji’s hope in winning some medals apart from the Fiji Airways Men’s National 7s team.

The Fiji Weightlifting squad has the goods to add to its medal tally at the Commonwealth Games.

Team Fiji Chef de Mission Patrick Bower says after years of financial and political strain, they were looking forward to competing on an even footing on the Gold Coast.

Apolonia Vaivai was Fiji's only medal winner in Glasgow in the 75kg class, and was looking to go better at 69kg this time around.

Eileen Cikamatana was a big hope in the 90kg class, having set Commonwealth records in recent times.

Bower says the netball team was also looking to improve its world ranking.

The Commonwealth Games will be officially opened tomorrow with Apo-lo-nia Vaivai to be Fiji’s Flag Bearer.

Looking at the fixtures, the Fiji Netball team will take on Jamaica at 3pm Thursday before they face Barbados at 10.22pm Saturday.

The Boxing, Weightlifting and Badminton will also starts on Thursday, Beach Volleyball starts on Friday while Athletics will start on Sunday.
