A total of 36 families have been evacuated to seven evacuation centres in the Northern Division due to flash flooding in certain parts of Vanua Levu.

Divisional Commissioner Northern, Jovesa Vocea while addressing a press conference today, said six evacuation centres have been activated Macuata and one in Cakaudrove.

He adds that 30 these families are being billeted at Shiri Gurunanak Khalsa College in Labasa and six families in Vunivesi Village, Cakaudrove.

Evacuation Centres in Macuata also include Vunimoli Primary, Nacula Village, Wasavulu, Labasa Sangam and Batinikama Primary School and the RFMF Barracks.

Vocea says the operation team on the ground which includes the Republic of Fiji Military Forces, Fiji Police Force, National Fire Authority and other departments have begun evacuating people since 3am today.

Vocea is also calling out to members of the public in the North to make a move to safety during daylight hours and urged the public to contact the operation team on 8280350 if they needed assistance.

He has also highlighted that a portion of the suspension bridge in Korotari had been washed away in the flood leaving it inaccessible for the general public.

Vocea adds that as they monitor the situation another meeting will be held later today with the Head of Departments in the Northern Division where it will also be decided if schools will remain closed tomorrow.

Meanwhile, Acting Chief of Operations, ACP Maretino Qiolevu has urged members of the public to call their respective Command Centers if they need assistance as the Divisional Police Commanders have their standby teams ready to be deployed.
