Fiji has one of the highest water usage which is an average of 220 liters per day for one person.
Water Authority of Fiji’s General Manager for Customer Service, Sekove Uluinayau revealed this at the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Public Accounts on the 2015 Audit Report on State Owned Entities and Statutory Authorities today.
Uluinayau says in accordance with the international average which is 180 liters per person, a person uses 40 more liters of water in Fiji.
Meanwhile, Committees Deputy Chair, Mohammed Dean had said that a lot of customers complain that the Water Authority of Fiji bills were less with old water meters compared to the new meters.
Uluinayau says water meters get replaced after 15 years of use, because in 10 to 15 years the mechanisms become loose so the actual water being consumed cannot be registered.
He says the replacements have been going on for a while from the transition of PWD to Water Authority of Fiji and people were paying less then they should have paid and it was in that long period of time that people got used to estimated bills.
Uluinayau says the replacement of meters has actually gauged the correct usage.
He says changing water meters is done for free while new installations will cost $345.
