The Fiji Airways Men’s National 7s team will be facing Canada in the London 7s quarterfinals tonight after thrashing New Zealand 27‑7 in their last pool match this morning.
Fiji topped Pool A after a hard fought 28‑19 win over Argentina and a 39‑12 victory over Scotland in their second match.
Their last pool game against New Zealand saw coach Gareth Baber putting in Semi Radradra and Josua Tuisova to start at rover and the wing respectively.
The Toulon duo were outstanding with their hard running where they scored a try each in the first half while Amenoni Nasilasila crossed over with the first five pointer through a chip and chase in the first minute.
Fiji was leading 17‑0 at half time but they wanted to send a statement to the rest of the teams in the tournament as they shifted the gear to another level.
They continued with their momentum in the second half with well structured defence and good communication which frustrated New Zealand’s game pattern.
Tuisova scored his second try in the second half while Waisea Nacuqu had the last say to take the final score to 27‑7.
Sam Dickson scored New Zealand’s only try.
Captain Jerry Tuwai says they are looking forward to the quarterfinals.
Tuwai also says that Radradra and Tuisova have proven that they are not new to sevens rugby.
Fiji will take on Canada at 9.58 tonight in the first quarterfinal.
