Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama stresses that there is a need for greater policing in some areas as Fiji does not want the issue of violence against the vulnerable in the society to escalate.
Bainimarama made the comments at the Old Town Hall in Levuka after calls for better policing in Levuka.
The Prime Minister has been informed by Police Commissioner Sitiveni Qiliho, who was also part of the talanoa session, that they will immediately look into this.
Bainimarama says the safety of the vulnerable in our society and improving accessibility to schools for our children are very important issues to the Government.
The Prime Minister met with the residents and the business community in the old capital where he pointed out the Government’s focus.
There were many issues raised with the Prime Minister that he and his delegation comprising of senior Government officials, Fiji Roads Authority, Land Transport Authority and Fiji Police Force attended to.
The common thread to most of the issues raised pertained to better policing of the neighbourhoods, better LTA services, better roads and requests for permission by home owners whose homes are registered as heritage buildings to carry out repair works.
Bainimarama says these issues will be looked into as the officials have assured a quick turnaround time.
The Prime Minister stresses that there are two things that he is really concerned about, as he knows the other issues will be sorted out. Bainimarama is concerned about the transportation of children and violence against women and children.
Meanwhile, the LTA is expected to open a branch in Levuka in the near future and this will help solve a lot of the transport woes faced not only in Levuka town but in the rural parts of the island.
