A patient screening system which would allow elderly people to be seen much earlier in public hospitals around the country is being looked into by the Health Ministry.

Health Minister Rosy Akbar told health professionals at the Internal Medicine Organisations Scientific Conference at Peninsula Hotel this morning that this is something they are working towards to see how best elderly people could be served earlier.

Fiji Pensioners Association President Hari Raj Naicker had told Fijivillage that they are seeking to get a special area in the outpatient department in main hospitals across the country where they can go to without having to wait for hours to be checked or treated.

They had written to the Ministry of Health on this special request.

The Health Minister also told the doctors and nurses at the conference that everyday she receives about ten to twenty calls from people who are not happy with the services of medical staff.

The Internal Medicine Organisations Scientific Conference will finish tomorrow.

Medical professionals from across the region are at the conference discussing how to effectively tackle disability issues in resource deprived settings.
