Cases of emotion must be tackled with thorough professionalism and knowledge of procedure, evidence, the rules and the legislation.
This was highlighted by Chief Justice Anthony Gates while officiating at the swearing in ceremony for 19 new barristers and solicitors who are the law graduates of the University of Fiji.
Speaking at the Suva High Court, Chief Justice Gates urged the new legal practitioners to continue to strive with decency, dignity and honesty adding that their struggles have just begun.
He stressed that as lawyers they must always remember their allegiance to the law, its philosophy and principles, not to causes adding that they must maintain that spine of uprightness, or professionalism.
The Chief Justice also challenged the newly sworn in barristers and solicitors to translate whatever they have learnt through the years of study into a practical commodity.
He says that such a translation is essential if their knowledge is to help anyone and if they are to earn a necessary living from that knowledge.
