The International Cricket Council has confirmed they have submitted a bid for women’s T20 cricket to be included in the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.

ICC CEO David Richardson said the reason behind the bid was to bring new fans to the sport and inspire a new generation of female cricketers.

The bid, made a day after Australia beat England in the final to win the Women’s World T20 Cup in the Caribbean.

Should it be successful, it would be the second time cricket has been part of the Commonwealth Games after the men competed at the 1998 event in Kuala Lumpur. South Africa beat Australia in the gold medal match.
