Triple jump champion Eugene Vollmer is using the July Pacific Games as a building block for next year’s Olympic Games in Tokyo, Japan.
The 30‑year‑old recorded a jump of 15.35 metres, surpassing the Pacific Games qualifying threshold of 15.20m.
Vollmer won gold at the 2015 Pacific Games in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea and is out to defend his title this year.
Speaking to Fijivillage, Vollmer says that he may also feature in the 4x100m relay event in Samoa.
The former Marist Brothers High School student says Samoa is a special place to compete in as this is where his international sporting career began where he first represented Fiji back in 2007.
Vollmer adds that it is always tough going up against the region’s best but he is confident of a good outing.
Vollmer is one of Team Fiji’s senior athletes and he will be competing at his fourth Pacific Games this July.
The Pacific Games begin on the 7th of July in Samoa.
