The Executive Director of the United Nations Population Fund Pacific Dr. Natalia Kanem says she has observed that Fiji’s Leadership recognizes the rights of people living with disabilities as an important issue that they have to address .
She says that one of the solutions to address the concerns of people living with disabilities is not to hide it under the rug like it was done in the past and also to remove any kind of stigma , shame and discrimination.
Dr Kanem says that Fiji is ahead in the sense that in order to solve a problem you have to recognize it and have a willingness to address it.
Dr Kanem says that she has also observed that Fiji is ahead in terms of disasters when it concerns people living with disabilities.
She says that there is an emphasis on being able to locate and know the needs of people who for example may be in a wheelchair, or maybe visually impaired.
