Prayers began early morning at the Shiv Mandir in Samabula today as thousands of Hindus around the country celebrate Mahashivratri.
Maha Shivratri marks the wedding day of Lord Shiva and Parvati, and it is also a night of overcoming darkness and ignorance. Devotees fast throughout the day and most of the night.
Sanatan Dharam Pratinidhi Sabha Secretary Pundit Vigyan Sharma says it is good to see so many of the younger generation praying so devotedly especially since most of the time the younger generation are said to be backward when it comes to prayer.
He says in this day and age people should have faith in their God and follow their scriptures and they will reap the benefits of their faith.
Sharma says hundreds of devotees have been lining up at the Shiv Mandir since the early hours to pray and offer fruits or “prasad” to Lord Shiva.
The rituals of worship today hold the most significance and will please Lord Shiva the most.
