UN Secretary General António Guterres has accepted an invitation by Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama to visit Fiji that is likely to take place in May.
UN Secretary General Guterres says that he looks forward to visiting Fiji.
The visit will provide him with an opportunity to personally view the variety of approaches and programs that are being implemented by Fiji.
The visit to Fiji by the Secretary General will generate momentum for the 2019 Climate Summit.
Meanwhile, in a meeting both leaders discussed the need for greater urgency by the world’s leaders in tackling climate change issues.
Bainimarama highlighted to Guterres that the Pacific region was leading the world on many fronts in both depth and pace of actions and he also discussed the need for robust discussions and serious actions in mitigating climate change in preparations for Climate Summit in September and also COP25.
The Prime Minister also spoke at the General Assembly today on the need for more pace and depth in actions being undertaken by countries to reach 1.5 degrees.
