Sextortion which is when someone threatens to distribute your private and sensitive material if you don't provide them with images of a sexual nature or money is now a growing concern in Fiji.
The Officer in Charge of the Police Cyber Crime Unit Assistant Superintendent of Police Abinesh Chand says they have received numerous reports of sextortion and in the cases brought to them a woman overseas would persuade a man to take naked photos of himself and share it with her.
Speaking at the Vodafone ATH Foundation Multi-Disciplinary Conference at FNU Campus in Samabula, Chand says after those men send their naked photos, they would then be threatened to send thousands of dollars overseas because if they don’t, their naked photos could be released online.
He says most of the victims in the cases brought to their attention are married men.
He says for these victims it becomes a “she commands and he does it” situation.
Chand says another concern is blackmailing between couples after they break up where the ex-girlfriend or ex-boyfriend would threaten to release naked photos to the family or on Facebook.
He says these cases are now common among University students.
Chand says their advice is don’t take naked photos of yourself and never share your phone with anyone else.
