SODELPA MP Anare Jale’s petition for the provision of reliable, safe and affordable shipping services for the Lau Group has been approved to be referred to the Parliamentary Standing Committee.

Speaker of Parliament Ratu Epeli Nailatikau says the motion satisfied the percentage and the petition will be referred to the committee.

Nailatikau highlighted that as the motion was moved by the Opposition, 40 percent of the total members of parliament must approve, which means there must be 21 members who vote in favour of the motion in order for it to be agreed to.

23 voted for the motion, 27 voted against it and one did not vote.

While speaking on the petition, Anare Jale highlighted that in comparison to shipping services to other groups in Fiji, the service to Lau is far inferior in relation to reliability, safety and affordability.

Minister for Transport, Jone Usamate says government agrees entirely with the importance of providing reliable, safe and affordable shipping services to the maritime zones.
